What is the Building Metrics Labeling tool..?
Welcome to the Integrated Design Lab's Building Metrics Labeling website! This free tool supplies you with an easy way to obtain performance information related to your building's energy usage, and is provided to you as a one-page graphic sheet. This graphic sheet illustrates a buildings EUI (Energy Use Intensity), ENERGY STAR® Score, Walk Score® for amenities within a half-mile radius, and the percent of floor area daylit. Energy use in buildings has become an important topic over the past several years, and with national goals to reduce energy consumption, building owners and tenants are beginning to see the link between lower energy consumption and building operating costs. This graphic is intended to help stimulate market awareness of energy use. The four metrics illustrated in the graphic sheets are explained in greater detail below.

Labeling sheet example..
- The EUI (Energy Use Intensity) Score is a measurement of the annual building energy usage divided by the total building square footage (actual sq.ft., not leasable sq.ft.). This metric provides an annual measurement of a buildings energy consumption relative to its size. The lower the EUI score, the lower the amount of energy the building uses. This score allows for a more reasonable comparison of a buildings energy usage with other buildings of that type.
- The ENERGY STAR® Score, gathered from the buildings energy information via ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, is a measurement that rates your buildings energy usage compared with an established benchmark. Your buildings ENERGY STAR Score reflects the amount of improvement over the baseline that your building achieves. A score of 75 is the ENERGY STAR's established high performance baseline, and anything at or above this rating is identified as a high performing building. Any building that does not achieve a minimum rating of 75 will not receive an ENERGY STAR Score.

*Note, this metric is based on user input and does not signify ENERGY STAR Certification. Please see www.energystar.gov for more information related to ENERGY STAR Certification.
- The Walk Score® is intended to show the proximity of resources within a half-mile walking radius of your building. The metric is from 1-100, with a score of 100 being the most walkable. This score incorporates a number of resources including shopping, schools, housing, entertainment, and restaurants. Although not directly related to the buildings energy performance, this score plays an important role in the reduction of overall energy usage and C02 emissions. It can also have a great impact on the health and well being of the individual.
- The Daylit Area is a measurement which illustrates the percentage of the floor area that is daylit. This measurement reflects the amount of natural indoor light provided, which can reduce electrical lighting energy use within the building as well as improve the indoor environment for occupants. This measurement does not take into account visual comfort and glare issues, but rather is intended to identify the potential quantity of daylight that is available within the space.
