Modeling Gone Wild – A Case Study on Modeling for a Ground-Source Heat Exchange System |

| Description: |
The analysis of ground-source heat exchange systems requires a different set of calculations from those used to design typical building HVAC systems. Current trends in design practices indicate a lack of understanding of design criteria to be used in "right-sizing" these systems. The use of excessive "safety factors" and "conservative estimates" can result in capacities 400% higher than actual loads, which drives up project implementation costs. This presentation includes an overview of ground heat exchange systems and includes a case study that demonstrates many design issues that need to be considered when designing these or other central HVAC systems. It also demonstrates how the selection of several different modeling software tools and appropriate design criteria can result in right-sizing of cost-effective ground heat exchange systems. |
