Description:

In this presentation will we review the state of Autodesk simulation software, Insight and how it compares to the traditional energy model workflow of EnergyPlus and Open Studio. Insight is a cloud-based analysis tool which evolved from a previous Autodesk software, Green Building Studio, and focuses on energy and environmental performance as well as improving BIM workflow integration. Insight is an overlay type of integration with Revit models of various detail from conceptual massing to detailed Architectural models so that design decisions can be analyzed to measure the impact on the overall building performance through the design process. Insight simulation and analysis focuses on the following three areas: energy, daylighting, and solar analysis. We will review in detail the workflow, types of simulation engines, simulation parameters, and results analysis for Autodesk Insight which will then be compared against EnergyPlus and Radiance models.

Learning Objective 1 - Participants will be able to explain how Insight’s workflow and interface are different from the traditional energy model method of EnergyPlus and it’s interface Open Studio, but also, the benefits or drawbacks between the two workflows.

Learning Objective 2 - Participants will be able to understand how to integrate Insight’s simulation and analysis into their design process ranging from conceptual box models to detailed Architectural models within Revit.

Learning Objective 3 - Participants will be able to demonstrate their energy simulation analysis with other design team members inform or refine the design process, but also, share the impact of these design decision through an graphic user interface online.

Learning Objective 4 - Participants will be able to use Insight and Revit BIM models for code compliance and LEED certification points.

Bio:

Dylan Agnes

After earning a degree in Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Idaho, Moscow campus I wanted to pursue my Master's degree in Architecture in an urban environment, but also, to explore further the Science and Engineering of building design. The Integrated Design Lab was the place I wanted to work because of their actions in practicing Integrated Design where Architects and Engineers not only work together but that developing skills from the opposite profession is allowed and encouraged. I started working on projects at the Lab through class projects in Spring of 2015 because of a desire to work on real world projects. Shortly after that semester I began working as a Research Assistant at Lab working on a wide range of projects from Energy Modeling to Daylighting Design. I graduated with my Master's of Architecture in Fall of 2017 with an emphasis in urban planning and net-zero/energy efficiency building design.
