The first of these lighting case studies features a High Intensity Discharge (HID), Metal Halide (MH) upgrade in a parking lot application. This case study upgrades a pole mount MH lighting system from a magnetic ballast to an electronic ballast, and utilizes an improved lamp with an increased efficacy and improved color rendering index. The upgrades to this lighting system provided a 65% average energy savings and which corresponds to a reduction of 185,090 annual kWh.

New Buildings Institute in partnership with the University of Idaho and University of Washington has developed a freely available interactive tool for the design of proven daylighting strategies in a variety of building types.
