Description:
The IDL worked with LKV and McKinstry to support site design, daylighting design and solar shading analysis for the first two LEED schools in Idaho.

We looked at the existing solar control devices used in the design development of the Caldwell Elementary Schools and determined appropriate design guidelines and suggestions.

Priorities for the two schools are to minimize heat gain during peak cooling periods and to minimize glare within the classrooms and offices.

Since Caldwell schools are in session from last week of Aug till first week of June we analyzed the most efficient solar control for this annual time period. We have determined after consulting with the Mechanical Engineers that the cooling periods are approximately above 65 degrees. For Caldwell, ID these times are during the following months: Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep and Oct.
