Technical Design Assistance

An Idaho Power program to assist building owners in meeting energy efficiency design that goes above the current code standard. This program is generally used through Architecture and Engineering firms but is available to facilities managers as well. Technical design assistance is divided into three phases depending on work associated with the project.

Lunch and Learn

Sponsored by Idaho Power, we have 16 lectures available for 2026. Each year the IDL presents a handful of topics to professional Architecture & Engineering firms. These topics cover a wide range of design and building applications such as energy modeling and daylighting. Topics are focused on helping a firm integrate energy efficiency practices into their projects and design process. All in attendance will receive 1 AIA CEU as well as a certificate to verify attendance.

Efficiency Exchange Conference

Efficiency Exchange (EFX) is the premier networking and learning conference for energy efficiency professionals from across the Northwest. Over 500 regional and national attendees from public and private utilities, consulting and research firms, and government and non-profit organizations come together to learn and connect to help the region more effectively achieve its energy efficiency goals. The IDL director Dr. Damon Woods will be presenting on Tuesday May 5th and Wednesday 6th, we hope to see you at the conference!

The Energy Resource Library is a free resource available to Idaho Power Company customers. Hundreds of diagnostic tools are available for check-out to support your next energy efficiency project. Idaho Power Company and/or IDL personnel are available to answer questions about how tools can be used for specific applications and with help generating a measurement plan.

Title: Commercial Building Stock Modeling: Lessons from ComStock

The talk presents the unique challenges in creating a representative model of the national commercial building stock. The end-to-end process of developing the stock-level inputs, generating and running 150,000 building energy models, and processing and evaluating the output data will be explored. It will highlight lessons from the open-source workflow that could be applied to general BEM practice, and give example use cases for stock-level building energy data.

Design Tools
In our work we often find recurring time barriers to achieving energy savings in buildings. Sometimes we are successful in securing funding to create tools that will help to remove these barriers. The energy efficiency design tools available here provide design teams with information to support improved decision making in early design stages.
Featured Tool: CBECS 2018 - Data Visualization

Sponsored by the Idaho Power Company, the University of Idaho Integrated Design Lab (UI-IDL) developed this series of infographics to communicate how four different building types consume energy on both a regional and national level. The data used to create them has been gathered from The Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS), which is a national-level sample survey of commercial buildings and their energy suppliers conducted quadrennially by the Energy Information Administration (EIA). Currently, there are five, three pages, 11x17" infographics. The first is an introduction to the project and the CBECS database. The next four delve specifically into the Food Service, Public Assembly, Service and Warehouse building type.
